Final project SFSU/NASA Ames Educational Outreach
NASA Ames is seeking ways to encourage and inspire the pursuit of careers in science and engineering among diverse student populations. To identify what NASA can do to promote student interest in these fields, a project team in the Instructional Technology graduate program at San Francisco State University (SFSU) has performed this needs assessment.

Based on prior research, NASA has decided to focus their educational initiatives on students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. NASA target population for their initiative is all students within the United States. The organization has further specified that the needs assessment must address how to reach students typically underrepresented in technical careers, including women and minorities.

The needs assessment presented in this report was designed to address five major objectives deemed necessary to meet NASA’s goal. The team’s methods for performing the needs assessment were a combination of literature search, original research, and extant data analysis. The extant data consisted of interviews of middle school science teachers conducted by a prior team of SFSU graduate students. The original research included a survey of students in 5th, 8th, and 9th grades, as well as a survey of middle school science and math teachers.
